Moving your belongings can be a particularly stressful time during any season.  To be sure to have the safest and most successful move during this winter, follow these simple tips:

• Be sure to drive the moving truck slower than you would a passenger vehicle.  The weight of the truck along with all your valuables causes the truck to be heavier, increasing braking time.  This is especially important in freezing temperatures.
• Cover the floors and carpets in your home to be sure that no snow or mud is tracked into your new home.
• Make sure to have enough moving help to ensure that you spend less time out in the cold.
• Be sure to have shovels and snow and ice removal tools handy in each vehicle during the move.
• Check weather and road reports frequently for changes in road safety.

Be sure to follow these steps on moving day to ensure you have a successful and safe move:

• Be present to answer questions and give directions to the movers.  Stay until they are finished.
• Accompany the movers as they inventory your household goods and resolve any questions regarding the condition of materials being moved.
• Carefully read the information on the estimate, order for service, bill of lading, inventory, and all other completed documents before you sign them.
• Keep the bill of lading until your goods are delivered, the charges are paid, and any claims are settled.
• Before the moving van leaves, take one final look throughout the house to make certain nothing has been left behind. 
• Give the driver precise and accurate directions to your new home.
• Inform the driver and the moving company of where you can be reached during the move.
